Now’s your chance to make summer last with
an end-of-season picnic. Here’s what you can do to avoid an
over Mowing garbage can.
p l a t e s
Eco-disposable isn’t an oxymoron when you use
dinnerware made from compostable recycled paper. Look
for Chinet Casuals in your supermarket aisle (about $3 for
44 plates). Heavy-duty Whole Foods 365 bowls and plates
are made from renewable, biodegradable sugar cane.
u t e n s i l s
Biodegradable utensils made from potato scraps
and bio-resins can be used for cold and hot foods. Stock up
on a combo set (250 sets for $46;
greenhome.com).

Ditch plastic bags for aluminum foil.
Make aluminum pockets and fill with chips and cookies.
Foil-wrapped sandwiches stay cooler longer. When done,
use crumpled foil to scrub the grill clean or recycle it with
aluminum cans.
“Here’s the perfect picnic treat:
Fruit that com es in waste-free
‘wrapping,’ such as bananas,
apples, and oranges.

For small parties, try inexpensive, colorful
bandannas. They’re sturdy, soft, and machine washable
for reuse. Or look for napkins made from 100 percent
post-consumer recycled paper. One brand I love is
Marcal
(marcalpaper.com).
